Magician & Mystic
A BBC documentary movie on the foot of Ibn Battuta by Tim Mackintosh-Smith.
Tim is an Arabist, traveller, writer and lecturer. For almost thirty years his home has been the Yemeni capital of Sana’a where he lives on the ruin-mound of the ancient Sabaean city, next to the modern donkey market.
Tim has edited Ibn Battuta’s own travel writings and made a three-part TV series on his adventures. In May 2011, Tim was named by Newsweek as one of the twelve finest travel writers in the past hundred years.
In Turkey, Tim watches an illegal whirling dervish ceremony, and in the Taurus Mountains he meets the last of the Turkoman nomads. He chats to Tatars in Crimea, while in Delhi he watches a Muslim magician performing the Indian rope trick.
Tim travel books will be on sale on the evening with a special 10% discount.
