This Horton Creek Loop Hike is about an 8 mile counter-clockwise loop hike below the Mogollon Rim, using the Derrick Trail and the Highline Trail to reach Horton Spring and then using the Horton Creek Trail to return to the trailhead near the Upper Tonto Creek Campground. Started late and spent too much time at the Creek to view the fall colors and did not complete the last 0.6 mile. Encountered a black bear on the Derrick Trail, about 40 yards away. Lots of places to have a picnic or just hangout! Horton Creek was beautiful, nice flow of water with many small falls and mature ponderosa and fir trees.
